Chapter 1: Cycle 1

Something that just popped in my head that I've never thought of before:

If Lup hadn't died pre-voidfishing, wouldn't she have been even worse than Davenport?

Like, at least Dav kept his name. Lucretia erased everyone's memories of her, surely she'd be a completely blank canvas. Did Lucretia not think of that? Was she so sure that Lup was already dead that it didn't matter? Or did she think she'd be fine in the middle of nowhere, completely devoid of memory?

Sure, Davenport was the way he was because 'his life was the mission' or whatever. But Lucretia must have redacted so much to make sure Taako didn't remember his sister. There can't have been much left.

“I hate you.”

“I hate you too.” Taako twists another chunk of Lup’s curls up on top of her head.

“I hate you harder.”

“Good. It gives cha’boy strength.”

Lup snaps her teeth at him in the mirror.

Taako doesn’t flinch, just grins back as big and as smug as he can.

“Just stop taking my makeup?” She makes her eyes go wide enough that Taako almost relents.

He doesn’t though, he’s stronger than that, he’s a lifetime veteran of The Lup Look. She shouldn’t use it so often if she wants it to keep its potency. “How else was cha’boy supposed to get this shiny?” Taako wiggles his shimmery shimmery arm.

“By buying your own glitter, Goofus.”

“Uh huh, yeah, sure, no problem, cha’boy’ll start doing that as soon as you start buying your own skirts. Also washing up liquid.”

“I got some!”

“You got the off brand shit.” Taako doesn’t even try to hide his distain.

“It works just as wel…”

“No it fucking doesn’t! We’ve had this conversation, I refuse to believe that you think for a second that it does, you’re smarter than that.” Taako pins another chunk of hair firmly (but gently) in place.

“Aw! You think I’m smart?” Lup bats her eyelashes and gives him the sickliest smile she can manage in the mirror.

“I didn’t say that!” 

“You absolutely did, but fine, we’ll test the Garfield dish stuff sometime.” Lup shrugs nonchalantly, too nonchalantly.

Taako looks her straight in her mirror eyes. “You swapped it!” 

“I didn’t.” Mirror Lup avoids looking back at him.

“Prove it.”

“Prove I did!”

“Taako doesn’t need to prove it, he knows it.”

“Oh, so you decided I did something and that’s it forever? What if I assume you’re going to let me have full control of the TV for the rest of the month?”

“Breaking news, Dingus, you’re not Taako and therefore it doesn’t matter.”

“Cha’girl’s just decided that it works when she decides something’s true too.”

“That’s not how it works!”

“Then how does it work?”

Taako pins the last of her hair into place and adds the pins that make it look like there’s flames springing up from her crown.

“It works.”

“That’s not an answer, Ko.” Lup turns her head a few times, then adds, “...thanks, that looks great.”

“Yeah you do!”

“Flattery won’t get you anywhere.”

“It’s important to boost your confidence, Taako knows it’s tough being the less hot twin.” 

Lup kicks him. Taako isn’t entirely sure how because she’s sat down and he’s behind her and there’s a fucking chair in the way, but she manages it because she’s nothing if not resourceful.

“We have the same face!”

“Sure we do.” 

“You’re the worst.”

“I know you are, you said you are, but what am I?” Taako sticks his tongue out.

“Have I ever told you that I hate you?”

Taako taps his chin thoughtfully. “Hmm… have you, Lup Taaco, my most beloved sister, ever told me, your darling brother, that you hate me? Surely not! Surely you would never hurt cha’boy that way.”

Lup’s eyes narrow and Taako surreptitiously double checks where the nearest exit is. He can hurdle the costuming tables no problem. Sure, it’d take a while for Lucretia to forgive him if he fucked up her system, but life or death…

“Twintentional Destruction! It’s go time in 60 seconds!” Ren shouts through the door.

“We’re gonna crush ‘em.” Lup jumps out of the chair, there’s no ounce of doubt in her voice, it’s just fact.

“Natch.” Taako shrugs. “We’re unstoppable.”

“Do you wanna do the piggyback, or should I?”

“You can get on my back this time. You had that cool pose we practised.”

“Hell yeah! They’re not gonna know what hit ‘em.”

“What hit ‘em’ll be you. Clotheslining them from my back.”

“Fine, they might know…”

“But if we’re really quick…” Taako adds

“Then they might at least be slightly confused.”

“Do you know anything about these guys?” 

Taako had meant to, you know, do some kind of google or ask literally anyone for any information, but time happened and then the fight was today. He’d figure it out once he got out there.

Lup skrunkles up her nose in thought as they walk towards the staging area. “Nah. I think one of them was called Bluejean or something?”

“I saw some incredible feather cloak on the costume table, but ‘Creesh threatened to put a curse on me if I tried to steal it.”

“Did you try anyway?”

“Look, magic doesn’t exist right? But if it did…”

“If it did then Lucretia would definitely use it to damn your soul forever if you messed up the system.”

“Exactamundo. So you see how it’s not worth finding out if she can or not?”

“Yeah, fair. I’d miss you if she banished you to the depths of super hell.” Lup pats him fondly on the shoulder as they reach their marked entrance spot. Ren nods, holds up both hands to let them know there’s 10 seconds to go.

“I’d miss you too. Now let’s go murder some fresh meat.”

“Denim Man and Feather Boy are going down!”

Lup jumps onto his back and raises a triumphant fist. There’s no way they’re not taking victory tonight.

Here's a couple paragraphs of enemies to lovers tattoo artist and baker blupjeans AU that Bitsy and I did a few years ago and never (quite) finished or posted.

Barry stared at her. “I ‘marched in like I owned the place’?!” he asked, disbelief caking his voice. “When exactly did I do that? When I came over and politely introduced myself and you told me I didn’t belong here? When I spent every damn cent I had hiring local people to overhaul the place? When I threw a party for the whole town to try to fit in? When I gave away dozens of consultations that haven’t turned into a single bit of business? If that’s me owning the place, I’d hate to see what it looked like to rent!”

All the frustration he’d felt was just bubbling out of him and yet, he couldn’t help notice how beautiful she was when her eyes were bright with fire, how perfect her mouth was even as she yelled at him.

"you cant have accent headcanons it's a podcast" yes i can (actually more just a speculation of what would be interesting to work into a fic if i had time to write fic these days)

Davenport: speaks Common with such precision that you would not be able to guess he grew up speaking Gnomish. He tends to do the same with other languages he learns, but it takes a lot of practice so they'd be less perfected

Barry: canonical Bruklen (Brooklyn) accent in Common, which he grew up with. He's good at learning grammar & pronunciation rules in other languages, but not always good at making the sounds with his mouth, so tends to have stronger accents in other languages but good at reading/writing.

Merle: really fun to envision with a bit of a Dwarvish (Scottish?) accent actually. the average person who isn't used to it might have trouble understanding him, which does mean people occasionally will just nod and smile at him and they just have no idea what he's saying instead of making the effort

Lup & Taako: Elvish (Spanish) accent is notable but not difficult to understand. They're both good at very quickly picking up enough of a language to make conversation (especially Taako, apparently), and so have an easy time with vocal interactions but it takes more time to match all that to written words. Taako is a bit more precise with the latter while Lup tends to do it intuitively, but they're both real sharp where it counts.

Lucretia: On the other end of things, Lucretia is great at learning to read & write in new languages, but often much more shy about speaking them aloud, especially pre-Justice Cycle. If she has to speak in a language she prefers to practice the pronunciation alone for a while before practicing it with anyone else there.

Magnus: American Southern accent for sure; it's that rustic hospitality. Totally learned Elvish as his default second language in school and then re-picked it up via proximity on the Starblaster. Not the biggest languages guy; tends to do that thing where he learns a few words and then tries to convey stuff to people he doesn't share a language with by saying a few keywords with no grammatical order.

they'd be in unspoken understanding that there's a time and a place, but despite it all, I do think Lup and her loved ones eventually wind up joking about the whole disappearance ordeal (much like how Lup herself jokes to Lucretia about the memory wipe).

Kravitz asks Barry where Lup is one morning, and Barry's like "aw, shucks, I've got no damn clue, so I guess I've gotta go hole myself up in a necromancy cave about it. and do a lot more death crimes. sorry, bud, but I'm sure you understand" — and Lup, overhearing from the next room over (previously being sneaky because she was trying to steal Taako's snacks from the kitchen), just bursts out laughing. initially, just because it's her sense of humor, but she keeps laughing because she's just so glad that she can laugh at it.

Wind - cold but good

Sunlight - warm, so so good. please open all of the windows, especially for naptime

Grass - noooooo nono no nope sorry it’s too much :(

Carpet - mmmmmm kind of having a bad feet time here. Socks help a lot though

Wood - rough but not bad

Glass - smooth like a shark >:)

Water - warm is good but the second it gets room temp I gotta vamoosh. It’s freezing

Soap - icky but similar to the chamber goo, so manageable

Hair - why does my own hair feel weird? what the fuck? why have I never noticed that?

Fabric - cotton and polyester is fine. Anything with lace is too itchy, which fucking sucks because all my silk shit has lace on it. velvet is now on thin fucking ice. I can forgive denim because I know it would never hurt me on purpose

my take on story and song lup and taako

one thing ive noticed in the graphic novels is that taako wears pieces of old outfits a lot, so i kinda mashed up a few pieces i liked (and would assume to see in story and song) to make his final outfit. for lup, this is not her lich form, but instead what i would call her "out of time" outfit, aka what she was wearing when she went missing.

TAZ 2023 Fic Recs

It is that time of year again! Unfortunately, I don't have as many as last year, mainly because work and Life have been a lot this year. But I am very, very glad to share the fics I have loved this year and I'm looking forward to any other recs!

A Candlenights Barold by @sgrumby - or honestly, all three of the Reaper Squad Candlenights fics! Based off that one liveshow where Merle became Santa Clause. Now it is the job of Barry, Lup, and Kravitz to deliver presents to children every Candlenights! This one is based off A Christmas Carol and is not only hilarious but also super in character.

The Best Version Possible by @thedaisiestdaisy - Taako's experience with past romances, his current one with Kravitz, as well as the aftermath of Story and Song. This is a beautiful, meaningful fic that hits me in the feels every time I read it. It's such a deep, refreshing dive into Taako's character.

a monster might begin to worry by @anistarrose - In short, a Barry-kills-Governer-Kalen AU. In long: Such a good fucking fic. Rose's character voices are top notch and she's so incredibly good at playing with emotions and building up scenes. It's a god-tier Magnus fic, with some fun Magnus-Kravitz interactions and some wonderful hurt/comfort.

fill up your lungs, feel better - Barry spies on the BOBs corporate excursion and realizes his family still cares, even if they don't truly know him.

to eat from a poisoned plate - Barry leaves notes in Taako's cookbook.

Rode Hard And Put Away Wet by @holdmecloser-gandydancer - Band AU!! My beloved!! Lup, Johann, and Kravitz are in a band and it gets. Tough. To put it lightly. Whenever Lup discovers Kravitz and Taako are hooking up. This is a WONDERFUL and super funny fic, that also has it's moments of deep reflections and a lil angst! Plus, Blupjeans! We love that!

Astrology for Horse Jugglers by @noodyl-blasstal - Kravitz and Taako meet at a wedding. This goes badly for everyone except them. This fic is pure chaos and I adore it so, so much.

We Got Boned! - Another one by Noodyl! Barry and Lup write a book for payback, kinda. This one is such a fun, weird turn of events. I cannot describe my love for it.

Revenge Plus One by @ceilingfan5 - Kravitz is invited by his ex (Edward) to go on a cruise. A cruise that will host Edward's wedding. And, to add insult to injury, Edward (rightly) assumes that Kravitz will have no one to bring along. So Kravitz does the responsible adult thing: Invite the gorgeous man who sells bagels in the work cafeteria (Taako) on the cruise with him. There is fake dating! There is tension! There is romance! I love this fic so much, I want to eat it.

a lesson in boy math - Also by Larissa! Speed-dating, Taakitz style. Both Taako and Kravitz are the best shade of weird in this <3

fashion statement by @journalofimprobablethings - Taako takes Lup's robe when he finds her and the umbrella. Lucretia deals with that. This fic? Destroyed me. And I loved it. It's pretty full of angst but the good kind, y'know?? I'm in love.
